The Tigullio

The Tigullio occupies the eastern part of the province of Genoa: it encompasses the inland valleys and the riviera and extends from Camogli to Moneglia. Most of the villages and towns of the Tigullio can be reached from Villa Argentina in a few minutes by train or ferry.

Portofino and the coast

The coastal resorts along the Gulf of Tigullio were famous from the late nineteenth century—when seaside tourism began in Italy—and include Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Chiavari, Lavagna, and Sestri Levante.

Portofino is undoubtedly the most famous: perched above a harbor of moving beauty, this picturesque fishing village is a riot of scents and colors with two deeply connected souls. On one side is the Portofino of celebrities crowding luxury restaurants, venues, and shops; on the other, the nature park and historic buildings—private houses, churches, the castle, the lighthouse—that make it a must for all types of travelers.

Chiavari, on the other hand, is a very distinctive small port city, with an arcaded center with cafés and small restaurants and many shops and Liberty-era villas that testify to its ancient commercial vocation.

The inland valleys

All other Tigullio Riviera resorts are also rich in history, natural beauty, and culinary specialties, with ever-different nuances from place to place. Behind the Riviera extends the equally interesting hinterland.

The Tigullio valleys—Val Fontanabuona, Val Graveglia, Valle Sturla, Val d’Aveto, and Val Petronio—are dotted with medieval villages, mountain trails, and one of Italy’s most varied vegetations, thanks to their very particular geographical position.

One of the most fascinating inland routes is the Via dell’Ardesia (Slate Road), an itinerary tracing an ancient civilization that lived around this craft. For centuries, slate was used to cover roofs, pave house floors, separate fields, mark country paths, and embellish the facades of palaces and churches.

In the evening, after your Tigullio discovery itineraries, we will be waiting for you at Villa Argentina to take care of you!
