Arriving from the sea, Moneglia offers a strikingly beautiful view. Between tall, steep, and very green hills, between the two headlands of Punta Moneglia and Punta Rospo, facing the blue expanse of the Ligurian sea, the old village is nestled.
And at the sides, like two watchful sentinels, the two towers of Villafranca and Monleone—the two extreme points of a scenic backdrop of great appeal.
The word “nestled” is no coincidence: according to some, the name Moneglia may derive from the Latin monilia, monile, meaning something rare and precious, an ornament of nature.
Beach, sea, town center, vegetable gardens, and greenery—everything in Moneglia is closer, more within reach. This is thanks to the compact size of the place, which does not mean little space but a gathered, serene, human-scale space.
Sea, mountains, pedestrian centre
Moneglia offers sandy beaches—both free and equipped, so rare in Liguria—and a pedestrian center with the carruggi lanes parallel to the coastline full of shops, focaccerias, and small venues. The beauty of the sea and the care of public spaces have earned Moneglia the Blue Flag beach award every year since 1990.
Walking through the old village, you can also visit some interesting historic buildings, such as the Oratory of the Disciplinanti, the Churches of Santa Croce and San Giorgio, the Tower of Villafranca, and the Castle of Monleone—not to be confused with the fairy-tale castle in Coppedè style that stands to the west and dates from the early twentieth century.
