A hiking route: From Moneglia to Casarza

  • Moneglia – Casarza Moneglia – Montelugo – Rocche delle Catene (436 metres above sea level) – San Lazzaro – Casarza
  • Total duration: 3 hours
  • Difficulty: medium

Starting from the Church of San Giorgio, to the west of Moneglia, you climb towards the castle of Monleone. Continuing right and skirting the castle walls, you reach the Secca slope, where you continue uphill to Case Venino, where the trail begins. After about twenty meters, you encounter the sign for Casarza. The path, after a gentle descent, continues at mid-slope with ups and downs. between pines and broadleaf trees: following it, you reach Case di Montelugo. Here, after a stretch of dirt road, you find on the left the stairway with a wooden handrail that continues, with a fair climb, towards Rocche delle Catene. After a flat stretch, the trail intersects with another coming from Monte Moneglia towards Ca’ Bianca. From here it is also possible to return to Moneglia if tired.

The itinerary continues left to the mountain ridge, from where you can admire the beautiful panorama of Val Petronio. From here the path gradually descends through chestnut and maritime pine trees until meeting the Aurelia State Road; crossing this, you take the trail on the left that slopes down towards San Lazzaro, along a cobbled mule track known as “Muntà dei Poveri” (the Poor Man’s Climb).

Vegetation now also includes olive trees, especially from the Case Rissuolo locality, from where the itinerary continues on a dirt road to San Lazzaro and Casarza Ligure. From Casarza you can take the bus to Riva Trigoso and from there the train or bus to Moneglia.
